City of Ekurhuleni - Brakpan Old Location Housing Development

Background

The proposed Brakpan Old Location Township Development is located in Brakpan at the site of the Brakpan Old Location. This falls between Fourie Street, Gordon Street, Hamilton Street and Brenthurst. Several graves have been identified, of which the Next-of-Kin (NoK) are still unknown. Historical data available on the Brakpan Old Location site reveals that the township was a backdrop to many anti-apartheid struggles, with residents who were involuntarily resettled from their homes between 1974 and 1978 during Apartheid and had to re-establish themselves in Tsakane, approximately 15 km south. The Old Location was subsequently razed. No development was documented at the project site from 1944 onwards.



The Present

Today, the project site can be seen as a cultural landscape; undeveloped and largely an unmanaged urban open area. Presently large areas of the site are being used for the dumping of domestic waste. The rest of the area consists of the remains of the Brakpan Old Location giving it a strong sense of history. On the south-western edge of the project site is a large formal cemetery, known as the Brenthurst Cemetery. This cemetery falls under the jurisdiction of ELM. Historic data reveals that the cemetery only started functioning somewhere between 1995 and 2002. This cemetery should not be affected by the proposed development.



The Future

We are now consulting on this project and are pleased to introduce oldbrakpanonline.org as a new and innovative consulting tool. Our goal is to provide an interactive forum for engagement, as we must find ways to move forward during these challenging times as we deal with the impacts of COVID-19.
